This little painting is remarkably detailed, and has a luminous textural quality in person. I used dozens of layers of translucent paint to create the confetti-like mix of colors that give this work its unique glow. The combination of tiny white daisies and large golden sunflowers in a copper pot evoke cheerful images of Sunday afternoons with family and friends.
I love to work on paintings that are inspired by actual moments in my life. I discovered two worn old vintage frames in a shop in a Mexican village, and had two canvases stretched to fit (please see its sister painting here to view the actual wooden frame, this photo does not show it). The vintage quality of the smooth oval wooden frame seemed a perfect setting for a traditional floral composition. Sunflowers always represent lazy Sunday afternoons to me - and this miniature displays a powerful presence when hung in a smaller space in need of a little love, such as on a dining room or kitchen wall, a reading space, or hallway niche. It comes ready to hang.
