This painting captures a moment below the sea, featuring a colorful seahorse surrounded by anemone in a palette of pinks, violet and blue. A pink pearl, sea shells and a lost key - perhaps to a trunk on a sunken ship - sit on the ocean floor below. The seahorse floats in a gentle current, secured to a cluster of anemone with his tail, his white tendrils waving out behind.
This work is painted in oils and translucent glazes applied over a copper metallic background, creating a glowing quality that is magnified when light hits the canvas. Some of the color elements in the composition have been transposed, with blue and green sea tones applied to the seahorse while warm copper tones represent water. This heightens curiosity, while the tension between cool and warm tones encourages the viewer's eye to circle the composition, exploring one element at a time, before returning to the seahorse's face. The seahorse often symbolizes calm in the midst of rough storms, and exemplifies patience, friendship, and protection.
The sides are painted in a black satin finish and the work comes ready to hang.
