Amor is a whimsical painting that captures an intimate moment shared between a woman and her dog.
The woman in this scene is preparing for an evening out, wearing a long white dress and carrying a red silk shawl. The intense red color of the shawl directs the eye toward a black-and-white harlequin ball she’s holding in her hand, and then downward to the dog, whose back foot rests stubbornly on the tail of the shawl.
The harlequin ball, though a small element at the center of the composition, serves as a powerful testament to the complex, loving relationships we hold with the sentient beings in our lives; the dog is trying to prevent the woman from leaving without him, while she is offering him the ball in exchange for leaving him behind. Her face expresses a mixture of affectionate amusement and sympathy, as the dog pleads silently to be taken along.
The woman’s flowing silver hair references the wisdom of the humanitarian, while her graceful figure suggests the idealism of youth. A background of lustrous metallic bronze studded with raised rose flourishes creates a rhythmic foundation for this active composition, as purple and white passion flowers guide the eye around the perimeter of the scene. Glowing candles on the windowsill illuminate a calico cat as he gazes intently at the viewer, while an iguana eyes the cat warily from his perch above it all. Outside of the window, a full moon hangs in the night sky - a Buddhist symbol of human enlightenment. The checkerboard floor tile and lotus-flowered oriental carpet underscore the exotic yet familiar feeling of this classic scene of love between humans and our animal companions.
