Ballet Slippers is a lyrical still life that challenges tradition as its starry night sky dissolves into the tableau of a dancer’s beside table, imparting an almost surreal quality to the piece.
The color palette of deep blues and greens juxtaposed against warm reds, pinks and gold draws the viewer’s eye into a vibrant bouquet of hydrangeas before leading it downward to a pair of violet ballet slippers. Encrusted with glowing emeralds and tiny silk roses, the slippers stand propped against the side of a cobalt blue vase. Their gold ribbons cascade across a velvet-draped surface strewn with the remnants of an evening dance performance.
A string of broken pearls spills from a candle dish holding gold coins, emerald earrings, and melted candle wax, symbolic of the transience of material things. A half-burned candle casts a golden glow that illuminates nearby objects as the flame’s reflection is captured on the vase, symbolic of the beauty of life, captured only in our memories before disappearing with the passage of time.
This painting depicts the intimate scene of a ballet dancer’s bedside table following a performance - a bouquet of congratulatory flowers placed in a vase, ballet slippers removed from tired feet, earrings and coins tossed aside, a candle glowing in the night - the ballerina herself, seemingly just outside of view, left to the imagination of the viewer. Is this a dream, a memory, or a captured moment? That, too, is for the viewer to decide.
Although only 11" x 14" in size, this painting’s complex composition, dreamy color palette, and intriguing narrative establish a powerful presence in a small interior space. The sides are painted in a black satin finish and the piece comes ready to hang.
